rename to source

Rename To Source Rename To Source is an Adobe After Effects utility script that instantly renames selected layers and project panel assets to match their true source names.

After Effects makes it incredibly easy for layer names and project assets to drift away from what they actually are—especially after imports, replacements, proxies, or quick revisions. Before long, timelines become harder to read, project panels get messy, and simple searches take longer than they should.

Rename To Source fixes that in one run.

When layers are selected in a composition, the script renames them to match their linked source (footage or precomp), while intelligently ignoring native AE layers like solids, shapes, nulls, adjustment layers, cameras, and lights.

When linked assets are selected in the Project panel, the script renames those items to match the actual filename on disk—while ignoring native AE items such as comps, folders, and solids.

The result? True and cleaner timelines and project panels whenever you see fit.

Currently tested and working with After Effects 2024 and 2025.
